The property sits upon land’s originally granted by William the Conqueror to the Testard family in 1076 and remained largely as farmland until the construction of the modern settlement of Guildford town circa 1800.
Our Client required a basement swimming pool with direct staircase access to the garden and a full-size gymnasium. Ancillary accommodation would be constructed to provide guest bedroom accommodation suite and steam room.
Situated on a steep hill and overlaying a chalk subsoil presented a number of excavation challenges during the early stages of the project. Compacted chalk displays many properties similar to low strength concrete and minimising the disruption experienced by both the Client and local residents was a key focus of the Cranbrook site team.
A complex system of heating and ventilation was required for the indoor pool area which also featured a 4m ceiling and a pool water depth of 1.4m
The basement benefits from significant natural daylight as a consequence of various external lightwells and the independent access staircase. Oak block parquet floors were installed throughout the basement and this theme was applied to the internal access stair which links to ground floor level.
All construction work was undertaken by the Cranbrook site team.
