Internal alterations to existing building including refurbishment of principle family accommodation, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Home to author D H Lawrence - 1923.
A highly unusual project to design and build a basement below a Grade 2* Listed building, conveniently located just off Hampstead High Street and within walking distance of Hampstead Heath. Originally built in 1720 and approaching 300 years of history, the house was home to the author DH Lawrence who in 1923 penned the world famous novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” whilst in residence.
A highly sensitive approach was adopted to complex negotiations with the local planning authority which resulted in the grant of both Listed Building Approval and Conservation Area Planning consent.
The construction phase challenges included extremely limited access to the property via a narrow one-way street coupled with a host of unique foundation challenges posed by the presence of concealed brick vaults and tunnels located directly below the property. Despite living within a designated Heritage building the client opted for a contemporary interior with minimalist finishes and clean lines throughout.
As part of the wider project scope Cranbrook were appointed to carry out a programme of refurbishment and renovation to the existing building to include kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms.
