Cresswell Place was originally named Bolton’s Mews as the houses were constructed as staff living accommodation and to provide stables for the larger homes located in The Bolton’s. An unusually wide Mews, it still retains much of the original granite cobble paving and a number of "Arts and Crafts" homes. In the early 1900s the Mews was home to numerous artists and sculptors.
From the initial meeting with the Client it was clear that in addition to the design and construction of a single level basement a wider refurbishment of the property was necessary. The property had been the subject of numerous alterations over several decades which had disrupted any sense of organised plan form to the house. To meet the Client brief, Cranbrook provided concept layouts that arranged the interior around a statement central staircase which featured a cellular balustrade.
Cranbrook prepared a planning application and quickly obtained local authority approval which included Conservation Area consent. Working closely with the local resident’s association, otherwise known as the Bolton’s Society and nearby residents, the company developed a suitable Construction Management Plan. Party Wall agreements were successfully negotiated with notifiable neighbours and works commenced.
Due to the overall scale of the project, the Client vacated the property at the start of works. This enabled the upper-level refurbishment to proceed simultaneously with the excavation of the basement.
Large format glazing was introduced to the south facing aspect, allowing sunlight to flood the interior of the basement and upper floors.
The entire construction process was completed by the Cranbrook site team.
